Sunny Garcia grew up in Wai’anae and got his first victory in 1986 at the Gotcha Pro at Sandy Beach in Oahu.
Sunny holds 6 Triple Crown surfing titles and holds the record for the most WQS event wins with a total of 22. His great surfing achievement was becoming the ASP World Champion in 2000. Only Kelly Slater and Andy Irons have higher career earnings than Sunny (he has over $1 million in prize money earnings in his career. Although he retired in 2005, he had come back to compete.
Sunny has always been a dominant force in the Hawaiian Surfing Association. Sunny was very consistent throughout the 1990s, finishing in the top ten every year and coming third four times during that period.
In 2000, 14 years after his debut, Sunny emphatically dominated the ASP WCT from the start of the campaign, winning the first two events in Australia and clinching the title in Brazil, the penultimate event. On the way he also picked up a fifth Triple Crown in his native Hawaii.
