Slater has been the surfing World Champion a record 9 times, with 5 titles coming in a row from 1994–98 and with his latest one coming in 2008. He won the title when he was age 20 and at age 36, both of which are the youngest and oldest ages for winning the title. Slater has 4 more World Champion wins than the next person in line, Mark Richards. Slater also has the most career wins, beating out his childhood hero, Tom Curren in 2007. Slater has also been a part of the X games in 2003 and 2004. Also, Slater has the honor of being the first surfer ever to be awarded two perfect scores for a total 20 out of 20 points under the ASP scoring system.
