Kauai’s Bruce Irons takes a different approach to surfing than most; he’s driven and competitive, but switches things up by maintaining a carefree attitude in and out of the water. Most agree that his potential is endless. Bruce forces progress in the sport by boosting on basically everything and he’s generally regarded as one of the best tube riders out there, driving through even the heaviest waves with a top shelf style and a level of comfort rarely seen in the new crop of surfers.
Folks have respected Bruce’s surfing for years with his many different competitive and video performances. It wasn’t until 2004 when Bruce gained mainstream notoriety by winning the legendary Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. He did it in 20-25 foot surf, and silenced all doubters in the finals by pulling into a heaving 10 foot Wiamea shorebreak closeout… the day’s only perfect 100-point wave. By winning the contest, Bruce became one of only six surfers to win the event in its 20-some year history.
Bruce made the move to the World Championship Tour in 2004 and his rookie year proved to be a tough one… Bruce faced elimination from the tour but made the finals at the Pipe Masters, the last event of the season, to secure his spot on the 2005 WCT roster. The waves at Pipeline have proven to be Bruce’s strongpoint on the tour; he also won there in 2001 at the Xbox Pipeline Masters and scored back-to-back Gotcha Pipeline Titles in 2001 and 2002.

In 2005 things really started to come together for Bruce. Volcom released “The Bruce Movie,” he took home three Surfer Poll Awards and he improved in 2004 by marking up a string of strong finishes all year. He capped off 2005 with a 3rd place finish at the Rip Curl Pipeline Masters, boosting his WCT ranking to ninth overall. With a world title still at the top of his list of goals, Bruce entered the 2006 WCT hungrier, with more experience, and as one of the top contenders for the title.
